Stakes winning stablemates Red Tracer and Nocturnelle kick off their autumn campaigns against each other on Saturday as their carnival ambitions gather momentum.
Trainer Chris Waller had a rare winless weekend but seems likely to pass the 100 mark for the season in the next few days with the Sydney record of 156 in his sights as he sits on 96-1/2 with more than five months remaining.
Saturday's Rosehill meeting features Canonbury and Widden Stakes for two-year-olds, the Light Fingers and Royal Sovereign Stakes for three-year-olds and the Breeders' Classic (1200m) for mares, the planned return for Red Tracer and Nocturnelle.
Nocturnelle stepped up to stakes level in the spring with Listed wins in the Tibbie Stakes at Newcastle and the Angst at Rosehill.
Red Tracer is a Group Two winner of the Dane Ripper Stakes last winter on a heavy track followed by a fourth in the Group One Tatt's Tiara won by Pear Tart.
She has a Group Two win in the Premiere Stakes and a Group One third in the 2011 Epsom Handicap to her credit on good ground but her wet track form is impeccable with five wins from five starts on slow or heavy.
"Nocturnelle and Red Tracer will both run in the Breeders' Classic," Waller said.
"Of the two, Red Tracer is probably the most forward at this stage.
"I wouldn't mind a bit of rain for her."
Both mares go into the race having had two recent barrier trials.
Red Tracer is a full sister to Group One winning sprinter Shellscrape and is raced by Geoff and Mary Grimish.
The Waller mares will face tough opposition with Steps In Time, winner of the race last year, and Pear Tart also scheduled to begin their campaigns in the race.
All will be headed to Sydney's Group One double for fillies and mares, the Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 23 and the Queen Of the Turf over the same distance two weeks later.
