Hurdle school keeps Shockemohle in mood

Thursday 2 June 2016, 11:10am

Brett Scott is hopeful a recent hurdle school can entice the best from Schockemohle in his return to racing at Sandown.

Schockemohle will line up for his first start since March when he runs in the Ladbrokes Live Play Handicap on Saturday.

Scott took the seven-year-old to Cranbourne last month where he finished third in a hurdle school over 2400m.

One more school will give Schockemohle his ticket to race over jumps and Scott, a former champion jumps jockey, believes that is where his future lies.

"He's a funny horse. He's a bit of a thinker," Scott said.

"I wouldn't say he's the most genuine horse on the flat so we're hoping a few hurdles in front of him will keep his mind on the job."

Schockemohle finished second over 2000m at Caulfield before running third in the Launceston Cup in February then was given a break after a midfield finish in the Stony Creek Cup in March.

Scott said a jumping career had been put on hold while the gelding was showing good flat form but it was now the time to switch focus.

He said the gelding had done all the ground work for a jumping career and it was now getting his fitness levels up and his jumping focus back in.

"He'll go 1600 metres on Saturday, maybe another hurdle trial then he'll probably go 2000 or 2400 on the flat and then we'll see what we do," Scott said.

"We're definitely keen to give him a couple of jumps races this year just so he's educated for next year.

"If happened to jump out of the ground and win one or two this year he then could be a Galleywood-type of horse next year."

Daniel Stackhouse takes the ride on the five-time winner on Saturday.
