John Hawkes admits to being very patient with Redoute's Choice gelding Revengeful who chases back-to-back wins at Goulburn on Friday.
"He was immature early. He took a lot longer to come to hand than we first though," Hawkes said.
"We've been very patient."
Revengeful is set to tackle the Homelee Hollow Agistment Class 1 Hcp (1400m).
Hawkes also has the lightly raced four-year-old entered for Kembla on Saturday and said he would study both fields before deciding where to run.
Revengeful is part-owned by now New Zealand-based Greg Ingham, the son of the late Jack Ingham.
The gelding couldn't have been more impressive carving out a win in a 1300m Goulburn maiden first-up on January 24.
Revengeful led throughout, kicking well clear at the 300m to put the issue beyond doubt.
Typical of Hawkes' relaxed manner with his horses, he simply described the victory as a good win.
"He didn't beat much but you can't do much more than win."
Hawkes has been happy with Revengeful's progress since his last start.
"He's done well, trained on good," Hawkes said.
"He's an okay worker, not brilliant, but I've been happy with him."
Many good judges consider Revengeful up to metropolitan class.
"Whether he goes to town depends on how he goes," Hawkes said.
"He's just starting to come right.
"I think he'll get there as a horse. Whether it's this preparation or next, he's got a good future."
