Theodore and Clarken chasing Diamond glory

Monday 18 February 2013, 5:10pm

When Stephen Theodore had to scratch his stable star Crack A Roadie from a rich race at Mornington last week, Adelaide trainer Daniel Clarken was the first person on the phone.

Clarken and Theodore will be rivals in Saturday's $1 million Group One Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, but the two have an association dating back to when Clarken was a foreman to Theodore's father Les.

"It wasn't a competition call. He was just the first person to ring me to make sure everything was OK," Theodore said.

"I suppose the friendly banter might start now, but I can imagine how he is feeling going into the Blue Diamond with one of the red-hot favourites.

"I dare say we'll probably end up watching the race together."

Clarken has unbeaten filly Miracles Of Life in Victoria's premier juvenile event while Crack A Roadie will take his place after convincing Theodore in a searching gallop on Monday morning he had taken no ill-effects from getting cast in his box last week.

Clarken was foreman to Theodore's father Les in Adelaide "about 16 years ago".

"And I've been a regular traveller to Adelaide in the past 10 years and would have probably had 100 horses go over there and stay with Dan," Theodore said.

"He's seen me grow up. We've been long-time family friends and we're both going to be there on Saturday with live chances. It would be a fairytale if we could quinella the race."

Crack A Roadie was set to run in the Inglis Premier at Mornington but was withdrawn after knocking a fetlock when in his box.

He spent a couple of days at the beach and on the water walker before Craig Williams gave him a testing gallop on Monday over 1000m, coming home his final 400m in 23.75 seconds.

"He's back on track," Theodore said.

"He was asked to really blow out the cobwebs this morning after missing last Wednesday's race and more importantly it was a hitout for Craig to test him out and let him know the horse was over his little setback, which he was in my opinion last Friday.

"Craig said he felt fantastic.

"It was a bitter pill to swallow last Wednesday but racing is a funny game and the way things work out sometimes, come Saturday it could prove to be a blessing in disguise."

Guelph is the Diamond favourite at $2.80 with Kerrin McEvoy to make his decision on whether he rides Guelph or stablemate Metastasio after Tuesday's barrier draw.

Miracles Of Life, to be ridden by apprentice Lauren Stojakovic, is at $3.

Miracles Of Life, Dissident, Metastasio and Montsegur have all been paid up for as late entries.

Theodore believes Crack A Roadie's $21 quote would be significantly less had the colt raced last week.

"I'd probably be disappointed if he didn't run in the first three," he said.
