A plan to bank on Super Cool being too brilliant for Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar got the desired result for trainer Mark Kavanagh and jockey Michael Rodd at Caulfield on Saturday.
Kavanagh and Rodd were confident Super Cool ($2.60) had the turn of foot to round up the odds-on favourite Fiveandahalfstar ($1.95) over the 1800m of the Group Two Autumn Classic and a patient ride from Rodd helped the gelding to a one-length win.
The pair spaced their rivals with Subiaso ($7) another 5-1/2 lengths away third.
"As it turned out it was perfect," Rodd said.
"We were confident he would be too brilliant for Fiveandahalfstar over this distance and that's what it came down to.
"We backed our judgment and thought the horse would be too good."
Kavanagh is using this preparation with Super Cool to build a foundation for the spring.
A shot at the Cox Plate looks high on the agenda, having won the Group Two Vase at the corresponding meeting last spring.
"He's unbeaten over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley," Kavanagh said.
Super Cool will have only two more runs this campaign but there are "plenty of options" including the Australian Cup (2000m) and the Alister Clark Stakes (2040m).
"I wouldn't rule anything out," Kavanagh said.
"The horse will tell us where we're going. This preparation is only to set him up for the spring.
"He won't be going interstate."
Super Cool also moved to second favourite for next week's Australian Guineas (1600m).
Fiveandahalfstar took up the lead but couldn't go with Super Cool after Rodd made his move on Super Cool from second last before the home turn.
Trainer Anthony Cummings said Fiveandahalfstar was still on target for the Australian Cup.
"He presented better and pulled up better than his first-up run," Cummings said.
"He's going in the right direction."
