The first surprise in the Mrs Mac's Beef Pie Sprint at Flemington was revealed in the photo-finish.
The second came when a track record for the 1100m was written against the name of the winner Loveyamadly.
In a race that changed complexion several times during its 62.15 seconds, the favourite Loveyamadly ($3) put its head down on the line to score by a short half-head from Avoid Lightning ($3.20).
Glows ($7) held third a further 2-1/4 lengths back.
Trainer Mick Price described Loveyamadly as a day-to-day proposition due to suspect front legs, making her win all the more valuable.
"I've been wanting to get some black type for her. This makes me think she's up to it," Price said.
"Now I'll try and keep her sound and keep her going."
Loveyamadly appeared set to win comfortably at the 250m when she edged past Avoid Lightning and Glows.
But Avoid Lightning fought back and regained the front until one stride from the line when Loveyamadly lunged.
"I think the other horse lost its way in the last 50 metres," Price said.
