Baster fails in careless riding appeal

Tuesday 5 March 2013, 1:55pm

Jockey Stephen Baster has failed in his appeal against a 12-meeting suspension and will miss Melbourne's biggest autumn race day.

The dismissal of his appeal by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board will also cost him the ride on Lucky Angel in the Monday's Adelaide Cup.

Baster submitted that the careless riding charge laid against him in the Australian Guineas was merely a "racing incident".

But the RAD Board agreed with the stewards that Baster had failed to take evasive action as soon as he could and had caused interference to runners inside him soon after the start.

Baster went on to win the Guineas on Ferlax.

The rider who recently returned from Singapore in mysterious circumstances was to have ridden the David Hayes-trained Niconoise in Saturday's Australian Cup at Flemington.

He had also picked up the ride on Lucky Angel for Tony Vasil in Monday's Adelaide Cup.

Baster can resume riding on March 15.
