Shamal Wind likely to miss Newmarket

Tuesday 5 March 2013, 2:01pm

Three-year-old Shamal Wind seems certain to be saved for a race in Adelaide, leaving Lone Rock as trainer Robert Smerdon's only Newmarket Handicap runner on Saturday.

Both Lone Rock and Shamal Wind went to Flemington on Tuesday morning to compete in jumpouts down the straight against other Newmarket hopefuls.

They finished third in their respective three-horse trials over 800m and Smerdon said that's all they were out there to do.

However, he said Shamal Wind would probably run in Adelaide on Monday rather than tackle the famous Group One sprint.

Shamal Wind started favourite in the Oakleigh Plate last start after the scratching of Barakey but beat just one runner home.

"I think she'll probably go to Adelaide for the Centrebet Classic on Monday," Smerdon told Radio Sport National.

"At this stage she's unlikely to accept (in the Newmarket)."

Lone Rock finished behind Perth star Luckygray and Yellowglen Stakes winner Fontelina in her heat.

"She wasn't there to have a tough time. She was there to have a breeze up the straight and I was satisfied with what she did," Smerdon said.
