Habibi to miss NZ Oaks, aims at Sydney

Monday 11 March 2013, 5:11pm

Star New Zealand filly Habibi is set to take on leading Australian filly Dear Demi in Sydney after her connections decided against contesting the most important fillies race in her home country.

Habibi was being considered for the New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham on Saturday after her New Zealand Derby win on March 2 but her co-trainer Dean Logan said Australia was now the better option.

"We're thinking of either Sydney or Brisbane, but we're leaning towards Sydney as going to Brisbane can make it difficult to have a spring campaign," said Logan, who trains Habibi with Donna Logan at Ruakaka.

Logan said Habibi was likely to have a two-race campaign in Sydney, taking in the Storm Queen Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on April 6 and the Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on April 20.

"Dear Demi looks like a very good filly but the New Zealand form usually measures up, especially the fillies," he said.

Logan said Habibi was only likely to go to Brisbane for the Queensland Oaks if her work wasn't good enough to go to Sydney, but so far she had recovered from the Derby win well.
