Tally ticking along well for Peter Young

Friday 24 February 2017, 3:14pm

For the second year in a row, Godolphin-owned galloper Tally will chase a Group race win on the undercard to the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield.

A year ago Tally won the Group Two Autumn Stakes for three-year-olds over 1800m while on Saturday he lines up at the meeting in the Group Two Peter Young Stakes over the same distance.

The weight-for-age Peter Young is a traditional lead-up to the Group One Australian Cup (2000m) two weeks later which is an option for the John O'Shea-trained Tally along with The BMW (2400m) in Sydney.

Tally, who finished third in the Australian Derby and Turnbull Stakes during 2016, is at $18 for the Peter Young which will feature a number of leading Australian Cup contenders including Caulfield Cup winner Jameka, the Darren Weir-trained Humidor and Emirates Stakes winner Awesome Rock.

O'Shea described Tally's first-up third to Burning Front and Humidor in the Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield as excellent.

"The boys were very happy with his work on Tuesday morning and he loves Caulfield," O'Shea said.

"He can give a good account of himself on Saturday."
