Vandyke chases another Group One

Sunday 12 March 2017, 5:40pm

David Vandyke is looking to two-year-old colt Eminent to build on his Doomben win and translate his form to Group One level.

Vandyke moved from Sydney to Queensland in April last year and has had 32 overall winners including 14 in the metropolitan area putting him ninth in the Brisbane trainer's premiership.

But he has had a frustrating run with 17 metropolitan race seconds this season, many by small margins.

Vandyke said he had always believed it would take him a year to settle in completely at his Caloundra training centre.

But he is confident his team will be firing strongly coming into the winter with a likely 18 runners at the Sunshine Coast trials on Tuesday.

Eminent, who made it two wins from three starts when he won at Doomben on Saturday, is being considered for a Sydney campaign.

"I think you will see a very good horse once we put blinkers on him. I kept them off him on Saturday because I wanted him to see what it is all about," Vandyke said.

"I am also keen to get him out to 1600 metres which is why I am looking at the Fernhill Stakes and Champagne Stakes for him in the Sydney autumn."

Vandyke won last year's Group One ATC Sires' Produce Stakes with Yankee Rose who was scratched from the Champagne Stakes with a minor injury.

Yankee Rose, a Cox Plate placegetter, is being set for the Brisbane winter carnival after recovering from a bone chip operation.

Vandyke said Eminent's success gave him a special thrill because the horse is owned and bred by Roy Henzell.

"Roy is the unofficial mayor of Caloundra. As a then yearling Eminent was one of the first horses to walk through my new stable doors and Roy has been a great supporter," he said.
