Matt Dunn to get dual boost

Thursday 13 April 2017, 1:01pm

As his stable continues to recover from major flood damage, Matt Dunn has two strong chances at Doomben he hopes can go on to the winter carnival.

The trainer and his staff got a much-needed morale boost when Quatronic won at Toowoomba last Saturday and he is looking to Realing and Snitz to continue the momentum a week later.

Realing runs in the 3YO Plate (1350m) and Snitz in the 2YO Colts and Geldings (1200m) with both to be ridden by the in-form Ronnie Stewart.

Two weeks ago flood and storm waters caused at least $100,000 damage to Dunn's complex at Murwillumbah.

The torrent damaged the horse pool, his office, his house and the feed room.

"Thankfully, none of the horses were lost and we were able to get into the stables the next day and lay sawdust to help dry things out," Dunn said.

Dunn has Queensland Derby aspirations for Realing.

"We missed the Magic Millions with him to concentrate on the winter. I think the way he settles in his races means he will stay," Dunn said.

"But if not we can come back to races such as the Queensland Guineas at 1600 metres."

Dunn was able to give Realing a trial at the Gold Coast on Tuesday and the gelding was not knocked about in the straight.

Saturday's 3YO Plate has brought together a classy field and Dunn believes some of fillies get in well at the weights.

"But Realing has raced well fresh before and he will be strong at the finish," Dunn said.

His stablemate Snitz will have to perform well to get the green light to press on to races like the Group Two BRC Sires' Produce (1400m) and Group One J J Atkins Stakes (1600m).

Snitz was an impressive winner first-up at Grafton before a good third at Doomben at his most recent start.

"He didn't get away too well last time and got back in the field, then he looked like winning at the 200 metres but got bogged down on the wet track. I don't think he handled the slippery going," Dunn said.

"But he has improved since that run and hopefully he can go on to the winter."
