Tisani Tomso to atone for Kevin Kemp

Friday 14 April 2017, 4:20pm

Kevin Kemp hopes to ease the disappointment of missing the chance to create a record in the Weetwood Handicap at Toowoomba.

Veteran Tisani Tomso missed a run in the Weetwood at Toowoomba last Saturday but gets a chance to atone in Saturday's Open Hcp (1050m) at Doomben.

Kemp holds the equal record with the late Bill Neilsen with four wins in the Weetwood through Startell (2001), Tellem (2005 and 2007) and Typhoon Red (2014).

He felt Tisani Tomso had been racing well enough to give him a genuine chance to make it five Weetwood wins.

But Tisani Tomso was balloted out of the race leaving Kemp without a runner.

"I really felt he had a good chance in the Weetwood which is his home track. But our rating wasn't high enough so that is the way it goes," Kemp said.

Tisani Tomso will be having his 56th start on Saturday and has won nine races but Kemp believes it could have easily been 10.

"At his last start he was third at Doomben in an open handicap behind Mount Nebo. But he ran into a lot of trouble in the straight and if he shouldn't have won he should have finished closer," Kemp said.

"But the defeat cost us a place in the Weetwood so let's hope he can make up for it on Saturday."

"He beat a good field in the Dalby Newmarket three runs back so he is in form."
