When Whisper Downs lines up at Caulfield on Saturday it will be for the 14th run of a preparation that began last July.
And if he does what he usually does, he could book himself a trip to Sydney and an extension of a campaign that shows no sign of ending.
"I've suggested a few times that he might have had enough," said regular rider Chad Schofield.
"But he keeps running well and enjoying himself."
During his lengthy prep, Whisper Downs has won four races and more than $250,000, and his trainer David Hayes is looking for more in Saturday's Smart Track Handicap (2000m), and possibly a lot more over the next few weeks.
Hayes foreman Bruno Rouge Serret said Whisper Downs could join the stable's big team in Sydney for the autumn.
"We really believe he's got a Group win in him and if we can find the right race for him in Sydney he could be up there," Rouge Serret said.
After a couple of wins from his first five starts, Whisper Downs struggled for form until Hayes revised his entire approach to the horse.
More ground, new riding tactics and some tinkering with the horse's gear turned him around, Rouge Serret said.
"It took us a while to work him out," he said.
"Now we just let him to do what he wants, settle where he's comfortable, and it's worked."
Schofield again has the ride on Saturday in a race in which stablemate and last-start winner Auld Burns is likely to miss in favour of Friday's Albury Cup.
