Havasay makes it four straight wins

Saturday 2 September 2017, 12:56pm

Promising galloper Havasay has made the step from restricted class to winning an open handicap with ease on Saturday but is set to have a break after the win.

Havasay, who was backed from $1.50 to $1.26, beat Mystic Opal ($10) by a long neck in the 1200m Handicap.

It was the gelding's fourth win in a row and he clocked a smart time of 1min 9.32sec.

Trainer Liam Birchley was in Bundaberg on Saturday but he has the Magic Millions carnival in mind for the five-year-old in January.

Stable foreman Allan Russell said Havasay would probably have an ease up before coming back into work for the summer.

"I don't know for sure because he is holding his form very well," Russell said.

"He was still a Class 5 horse today but he has been running around the same smart times in all of his wins."

Mystic Opal made up plenty of ground on Havasay in the final 100m but winning jockey Matt McGillivray he had something in hand.

"I hit the lead and I was able to give him a pretty easy run to the line," McGillivray said.

Havasay took his prize money to nearly $300,000 which should be enough to get him into the Magic Millions races.

Michael Cahill said Mystic Opal had been held for a run in the straight and had finished well.

Sony Legend ($9) was third and jockey Paul Hammersley said a wet track would help him.
