Gollan celebrates on two fronts at Ipswich

Saturday 23 September 2017, 1:50pm

Tony Gollan celebrated the birth of his first child with one of the most satisfying wins of his career as a trainer on Saturday.

Charlie Boy ($7.50) scored his first win in 574 days and 15 runs when he beat his stablemate Frespanol ($4) by a length in the City of Ipswich Spring Cup (1350m).

Gollan and his wife Jane welcomed a daughter Jamieson on Thursday night and Gollan has been busy in the lead up to Saturday's meeting.

"It is a while until I have to get home for feed time. But we will have an extra reason to celebrate with Charlie Boy winning," he said.

Charlie Boy, who previously had stints with Peter and Paul Snowden and Ciaron Maher, has been with Gollan five runs.

"His first three runs were very good and I made a mistake last time when I put blinkers back on him and a senior rider," Gollan said.

"I knew after 100 metres last week he was gone. He just raced too fresh. So I took the blinkers back off him and claim on him again with Tiffani (Brooker)."

"He is a horse who has raced at the very top with placings in races like the Doomben 10000 so he was in very well today."

He said Charlie Boy had been sent to Queensland to win some lesser races and he would look for similar events.
