Zac Spain guides Anaheim to Caulfield win

Saturday 23 September 2017, 2:28pm

Zac Spain says he is loving his stint in Victoria and a victory aboard Anaheim at Caulfield has given the apprentice his first Melbourne Saturday city winner.

Spain moved from South Australia to the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young stable at Cranbourne a couple of months ago on a three-month loan.

Saturday's victory on Anaheim for the Busuttin and Young stable was the 21-year-old's 11th winner in Victoria this season and his first in town.

"It's a massive thrill," Spain said.

"Trent and Natalie have been good supporters of mine and I'm just glad I can reward them for giving me the opportunities.

"I'm loving it over here and I'll probably look at extending some time."

Spain has been riding for three and a half years and said he had six months left of his apprenticeship.

Anaheim was competitive in Group One classics for three-year-olds last season and was second-up on Saturday in the Lojac Civil Handicap (1800m).

After pressing forward early and eventually settling in behind the lead, Spain sent Anaheim ($9) through a gap at the top of the straight and he went on to beat favourite Sin To Win ($2.90) by half a length.
