Trainer Mick Price is considering throwing unbeaten colt Octabello in the deep end in the $2 million Group One Caulfield Guineas if the three-year-old can gain a start.

After winning his maiden at Bendigo on debut in early July, Octabello resumed from a break in Wednesday' Rose Of May Handicap at Flemington to keep his perfect record.

Price said Octabello ($18) was excitable pre-race and then was slowly away so the trainer felt it was a good effort from the colt to still win first-up over 1400m with improvement to come.

"He's obviously got some capacity and we do chase the good races, so I'm going to cross my fingers that somehow we may be able to get a run in the Caulfield Guineas," Price said.

"It's ambitious. But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.

"It's probably even going to end up being second-up after two-and-a-half weeks, but I'll have a think about it."

Price said sometimes the Caulfield Guineas (1600m), which is on October 14, was not a capacity field.

"It's his home track and it's two-million bucks," the trainer said.

"If we have to go and chase something less, that's fine. I think he'll get a mile and he's obviously some sort of black-type horse."
