Churchill Dancer ended his autumn campaign on a good note as he earned his connections a nice pay day with victory in the Vobis Gold Ingot at Flemington on Saturday.
The David Hayes-trained two-year-old, who was sent out an $8.50 chance, followed favourite Hard Stride ($3.50) during the running of the $180,000 event over 1200m before being able to run past him on the outside to win by three-quarters of a length, with Tonyboy ($5) another 1-1/4 lengths away third.
Stable representative Bruno Rouge-Serret initially mentioned a trip to Adelaide could be on the radar for the improving gelding, but after a discussion with Hayes and jockey Nick Hall he said the youngster would likely head for a break.
"Nick thought he had probably had enough," Rouge-Serret said.
"He'll probably go for a spell for about a month and then we can look at the early spring and let him find his way through those races."
Churchill Dancer was having his fourth start and Rouge-Serret was confident of a strong showing in the race, restricted to horses nominated to the Vobis Gold series, after his runner-up performance at Caulfield the start before.
"We thought he would be very hard to beat going on his last run because he was a little bit lost and new at Caulfield, and he'd worked up the straight at Flemington, so we didn't have any fears about that," he said.
