Pony Power set to trial before Doomben

Monday 11 December 2017, 1:42pm

Magic Millions Classic hopeful Pony Power will run in a barrier trial before trainer Chris Munce commits her to a start in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben.

Pony Power earned herself a start in the Magic Millions with a strong win at her only start in a metropolitan-class race at the Gold Coast on October 7.

Munce immediately sent her for a break and brought her back with the $2 million Magic Millions Classic on January 13 in mind.

"She will have a run before the Millions. But I want to see how she pulls up after a trial at Doomben on Tuesday before I commit her to a Calaway Gal start," Munce said.

"She picked up $40,000 for her Gold Coast win which is usually enough to get into the Classic. But some more prize money would make a certainty of it."

"Pony Power isn't big but she is tough and she has done everything right to date. She appears to me as a Millions horse."

Pony Power was one of 23 fillies entered for Saturday's Calaway Gal (1110m) with the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Eawase among them after being scratched from Rosehill on Saturday.

Eawase is also entered for a 1200m-maiden at Canterbury on Friday.

Munce won the Magic Millions Classic as a jockey three times on Sunblazer, Dance Hero and Excellerator.

Since retiring to take up training in January 2015, Munce has prepared 115 winners and has already made his mark with two-year-olds.

He won last year's Calaway Gal with Champ Elect and the Phelan Ready Stakes with Ours To Keep.

A $100,000 buy, Pony Power is by Group One-winning sire Foxwedge out of Lonoree who is from one of Australia's best families dating back to grand race mare Denise's Joy.
