Mair to set record straight in 2YO Classic

Thursday 25 January 2018, 10:42am

Trainer Mick Mair can add another feature winner to his outstanding record at the Sunshine Coast with King Of The North on Saturday.

A five-times premiership-winning trainer at the Sunshine Coast, Mair does not keep full records but it is estimated he has won close to 500 races at the coastal racecourse in the past 30 years.

There have been plenty of feature race wins but Mair is yet to take the Sunshine Coast 2YO Classic (1200m).

He has a great chance to change that with King Of The North in the $125,000 race.

Mair has been battling ill health in recent times but it hasn't dulled his sense of humour and love of racing.

One of the things helping him along has been King Of The North, who is raced by Mair's long-term owner Tony Hill, and has been a consistent performer.

The gelding won his first start at the Sunshine Coast by more than two lengths after showing ability in trials.

King Of The North then ran thirds behind top flight two-year-olds Blue Book and Sunlight before going to Ipswich to win his last start.

"It was very hot at Ipswich but he showed plenty of fight," Mair said.

"He deserves a chance in better company as he is gradually maturing with racing."

Mair is hoping his Sunshine Coast specialist Fast Arrow gets a run in the Sunshine Coast Cup.

Mair has booked his apprentice Taylor Williams for Fast Arrow who is second emergency for the race.

It would be Williams's first ride in a feature race since returning from injuries sustained in a car accident.
