Tough gelding Bold Assassin carried on a family tradition and gave owner Graham Cleary his first Queensland metropolitan winner at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Bold Assassin ($15) finished powerfully to beat Pinch River ($8.50) by a neck with a half length to Cruze ($3.60) in third place in the Coastline BMW Handicap.

Cleary has had horses with trainer Garnett Taylor since their days in north Queensland and they have had a lot of winners.

"I have had winners in Sydney and in Queensland but that was my first metropolitan winner in Queensland in 40 years of trying," he said.

Cleary has had all of the off spring of Bold Assassin's dam Princess Chloe to race.

"They have all won and they have all been by the sire Zariz," he said.

Taylor was the least surprised when Bold Assassin scored his second career win when he sprouted wings in the final 200m to swamp the field.

"I have always had a wrap on him right back to when we took him to the Cairns carnival where he ran second when things didn't go his way," Taylor said.

Winning jockey Jim Byrne said Bold Assassin had appreciated a fast early pace.
