Damian Browne closes in on 1000 winners

Thursday 3 May 2018, 11:55am

Top jockey Damian Browne has the chance to notch a milestone 1000 Australian winners with a strong book of rides at the Gold Coast.

Browne's win on Teyssier at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday was his 998th in Australia with 440 of them at his beloved Caloundra track.

His two stakes win at Doomben last Saturday took his black-type total to 80 including 14 in Group One in company.

Browne, who began his career in his native New Zealand, has ridden about 1300 winners worldwide and first rode in Australia in the mid 1990s.

He was based in Melbourne and won the 1996 South Australian Derby on Cheviot.

He moved to Caloundra in the early 2000s and has since won stakes races in all five Australian mainland states, New Zealand and Dubai.

On Saturday he has the key rides on It's Somewhat (Hollindale Stakes), Snippets Land (Gold Coast Cup), Gem Song (Ken Russell Memorial), Guard Of Honour (Bat Out Of Hell), and Marble (Gold Coast Guineas).

His rides are for top stables Godolphin, Peter and Paul Snowden and Kris Lees.

Browne has never been one to worry about records.

"But it is always good to get support of top trainers such as Godolphin, the Snowdens and Kris," Browne said.
