Darren Weir has continued his domination of the Warrnambool Cup with Gallic Chieftain giving the trainer a fifth straight victory.

Weir has been a dominant player at the Warrnambool three-day carnival in recent years and started his winning streak of Cup victories in 2014 with Akzar.

Tall Ship, Master Of Arts and High Church followed in successive years.

Ridden by John Allen, Gallic Chieftain ($8.50) out-plugged stablemate Yogi ($4.40) by a short-head at the end of the 2350m with Romanesque ($11) the same margin away in third place.

Weir thought the Jarrod McLean-trained Romanesque was going to upset his chance of a fifth straight win when that horse hit the front inside the final 200m.

McLean runs Weir's Warrnambool base while also preparing a team of 20 horses for his own clients.

Weir described the victory as tough after Gallic Chieftain was successful over 2530m at Flemington on April 25.

"He had that tough run before which held him in good stead for this," Weir said.

"Unfortunately for Yogi he was one run behind throughout the prep but has run terrific as well.

"The toughness in a tough race told late."

Weir said a lot of planning goes into getting the right horse to the Warrnambool Cup.

"It's been a good race and we've had the right horses on the day," he said.

"Luckily we got it right again."

Weir ended the three-day carnival preparing 12 winners, four on each day but fell short of the record 14 he prepared in 2017.

Besides Gallic Chieftain, Weir was successful with Thunder Cloud ($5.50) and favourites Furrion ($1.65) and Fifty Stars ($2.05) on Thursday.

Furrion and Fifty Shades were bought overseas as yearlings by John Foote and Weir is hoping the pair may develop into stayers in the mould of Signoff who ran fourth to Protectionist in the 2014 Melbourne Cup.

Weir says Furrion is likely to head north to Brisbane to run in the Queensland Derby.

He said a decision would be made after Furrion runs in a 2000m race at Caulfield on May 12 and the Grand Prix Stakes at Doomben two weeks later.
