Kelso Wood to close Brisbane stable

Monday 7 May 2018, 1:36pm

Multiple Group One-winning trainer Kelso Wood is expected to close his Eagle Farm stable after what was possibly his last runner won at Ipswich.

Wood has been training in a partnership with long-time employee Patricia Gesler in recent years after suffering health problems.

Their horse Delago Edition ($2.35) turned in a strong staying performance to win at Ipswich on Monday.

Wood was not well enough to attend the Ipswich races but Gesler confirmed to Sky Channel that it was the stable's last runner.

"Can I just say it has been an absolute pleasure to work with Kelso. To win this race means a lot ," Gesler said.

Wood has been hospitalised with circulation problems after surgery last year.

Gesler said the stable horses and her situation would be sorted out this week.

Wood was a leading apprentice in Brisbane in the 1960s before training in Sydney where his best horse was High Classic who won two Ramornie Handicaps at Grafton.

He returned to Queensland in the 1980s and had a steady stream of winners with a relatively small team.

Wood had a string of top horses in Queensland including Group One winners Unequalled (1993 Doomben 10,000) and Sizzling (2012 TJ Smith Classic now J J Atkins) and Real Surreal (2013 Magic Millions 2YO Classic).
