Caloundra trainer David Vandyke got a special boost after his former "naughty boy" Gracida scored a thrilling win in the Listed Chief De Beers Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.
Gracida ($9.50) chased the tearaway leader Spurcraft ($3.80) before wearing him down on the line to win by a half neck.
Tiyatrolani ($5) was 1 -/4 lengths back in third place after also racing on the pace.
Vandyke said Gracida had been a real trial for much of his career despite winning his ninth race on Saturday.
"He has been a bit naughty on occasions and in particular with the barriers. But to see him jump tody and chase the leader the whole way was a real thrill," Vandyke said.
Gracida is likely to give him another chance at another stakes race in the Queensland Lightning on his home track at Caloundra in a fortnight.
