Mitchell Beer strikes from new Albury base

Wednesday 30 May 2018, 5:02pm

Victorian trainer Mitchell Beer is thinking outside the square in his quest for a financial return for owners.

Based at Mornington, Beer has opened a satellite stable on the NSW border at Albury for the winter months.

The venture had immediate results on Tuesday with Broadstone winning at Albury.

Beer said the second facility was still in the teething stages and not a massive operation with six to eight horses.

"Coming into winter I'm not a massive fan of synthetic racing and that's just a personal choice of mine," Beer told RSN927.

"There's three synthetic meetings this week and other meetings are quite rural so it's not economically viable to take one or two horses per week to these meetings plus you also avoid the bigger stables."

Beer pointed out Ciaron Maher took horses to a Mildura meeting last week winning three races while at Hamilton on Monday Anthony Freedman and Tony McEvoy has success.

"They're good stables with good quality horses so it becomes very hard to avoid these strong stables," Beer said.

"Albury's a lovely big track so we thought we'd camp six or eight horses there during the winter and try and give our owners the best possible chance of winning races.

"I don't have 25 two-year-olds and yearlings coming through so I need to make these horses count, get money for the owners to pay the bills."
