The annual departure of Sydney's top jockeys to Brisbane for the winter carnival has opened the door for emerging riding talent to shine.
Nine apprentices will get the chance to sport silks at Randwick on Saturday including last season's champion junior rider Chad Schofield.
Now indentured to David Hayes in Victoria, Schofield has a full book of mounts headed by favourite Motivado for his boss in the Listed McKell Cup.
The up-and-coming Rachael Murray is also in demand and has been entrusted with the ride on the shortest-priced favourite of the day.
Everage is at $2.20 in TAB fixed odds markets for the Liberty International Underwriters Plate (1200m) having claimed the Listed Keith Mackay Quality at her most recent start on April 20.
Trainer Craig Carmody didn't hesitate to engage Murray for the plum mount after Everage was given 57kg.
"She will suit the horse," Carmody said.
"She's got nice balance, nice hands.
"(Trainer) Mark de Montfort recommended her. I've watched her rides and I was eager to get some weight relief.
"Although the horse has got residual fitness, it has been over a month between runs and I think the weight relief might help her, especially over the last 50 metres."
Murray started her riding career with renowned Scone-based horseman Greg Bennett and was in the running to win the local jockeys' premiership last season before she suffered a serious knee injury in a trackwork mishap.
She underwent a knee reconstruction and returned to the saddle in the spring.
Murray is now based in Sydney where she is apprenticed to Randwick trainer Grahame Begg.
