Ciaron Maher believes untapped home bred Akavoroun has all the qualities needed of a good horse and the three-year-old showed it with a stylish performance to remain unbeaten at Caulfield.
Akavoroun landed a big betting plunge to win a maiden race on debut during the Warrnambool carnival and went right on with the job in his first city appearance to take out Saturday's Jimjoca Handicap (1400m).
Maher bred Akavoroun on "the same cross" as Tears I Cry who he trained to an upset Group One Emirates Stakes win in 2007.
"He's always shown a lot of potential, like a proper horse," Maher said.
"He's got all the qualities that a really good horse needs. You've just got to take him to the races and see what happens."
Akavoroun ($14) settled in the box seat and lengthened nicely once he got clear in the straight to defeat favourite Scapolo ($2.80) by two lengths with a long head to Liberty Rock ($7) third.
Maher said Akavoroun would likely be given a break with a view to testing him in the spring.
"He's improved that much and I think he'll keep improving," the trainer said.
