A perplexing result at his only attempt over the Melbourne Cup distance has earned Permit another chance to prove his stoutness.

The gelding started one of the favourites in last year's Sydney Cup but was eased out of the contest midrace and failed to finish.

Trainer Chris Waller can't explain what happened that day but he is prepared to give Permit a second chance in another 3200-metre race at Randwick on Saturday.

"Last time we tried this in the Sydney Cup he appeared to choke down," Waller said.

"He basically pulled up halfway around. I'm not sure why, we never found an answer but we thought he deserved another chance."

Permit heads the 13 entries for the Stayers Cup and will be one of two Waller runners along with Thubiaan.

Thubiaan returns to Sydney following a five-start Melbourne campaign which notched a Flemington victory and four minor placings.

Included among those was a last-start third in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes won by Unchain My Heart, who he meets 2kg better at the weights.

"He led them up in the Andrew Ramsden three weeks ago and had he had cover he could have gone close to winning," Waller said.

"Hopefully he can get cover on Saturday because it will help him run out a stronger two miles."
