The potential of some of this season's two-year-olds to progress to the Classics will be put to the test at Randwick on Monday.
Several of the youngsters in the Significant Prelude (1800m) are also in line for a $50,000 Inglis bonus including the Gary Portelli-trained Mendelssohn.
The race is a forerunner to the Significant Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill on June 29, a race open to two and three-year-olds.
Distance races for two-year-olds were introduced in 2012 and the equivalent event was won last year by the David Payne-trained Honorius who has gone on to be placed twice at Group One level.
He ran third in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) and third again in Saturday's Queensland Derby (2400m).
Mendelssohn was a close third on debut in a race over 1358 metres at Cessnock last month and Portelli said he was pleased to have the opportunity to run him over further at Randwick.
"This time of the year is ideal for it," Portelli said.
"They are almost three-year-olds and it gives us a strategy for later on.
"Besides the $50,000 bonus is attractive."
Payne is a supporter of the concept of running juveniles over ground, saying it is something that is done in his native South Africa.
He will have two runners, Double Eagle and Devil Miss.
The two ran third and fourth respectively in a 1550m race at Canterbury last month won in devastating style by Romantic Touch, winner of Saturday's Group One J J Atkins at Eagle Farm.
At the other end of the distance scale, Portelli will send out Cosmic Cameo in the tab.com.au Hcp (1000m).
"He is a really nice colt and I'm hoping he can prove me right," Portelli said.
Cosmic Cameo is by Northern Meteor, the sire of Romantic Touch.
Northern Meteor is challenging Real Saga for first season sire honours.
The 1000m fillies and mares sprint on the program features the first city appearance of unbeaten Riverina mare April Rose.
The four-year-old, who is trained by Dave Heywood at Wagga, has had five starts, all over 1000m, and is adept on all types of ground.
