2YO Jewel revives fond memories for Gollan

No one would blame Tony Gollan if he feels nostalgic when Perudo tackles the 2YO Jewel at the Gold Coast.

Perudo will carry the colours of the Eureka Stud when she joins stablemates Ready To Roam and Sugar Boom in the $500,000 race.

It was 10 years in January when Gollan scored his then most important win when another Eureka Stud-owned horse Temple Of Boom who won his first start in a feature Magic Millions Prelude.

His half-brother Spirit Of Boom, who was also raced by Eureka, recorded his first win at the Gold Coast also in the Millions Prelude on his way to winning three feature races including a Magic Millions Cup at the seaside track.

Temple Of Boom and Spirit Of Boom wrote themselves into history, winning three Group One races and setting Gollan on the path to one of the most successful training careers in Queensland.

In the decade since Temple Of Boom's win, Gollan has sailed past 1100 career victories, won five metropolitan premierships and has enjoyed success in more than 50 stakes races.

"It is nice to recall past wins but really I like to look forward and we have some big races coming up," Gollan said.

One of those races is the Jewel, while restricted to QTIS bonus horses, is the third richest two-year-old race in Queensland.

Gollan believes his pair can be major players in an open race.

Perudo trialled well behind stablemate, the Golden Slipper-bound Vincere Volare, before winning her first start in Toowoomba by four lengths.

She then ran second to another stablemate in Niedorp in the Jewel Prelude at Doomben two weeks ago.

"That was a good effort and just what she needed as a lead-up," Gollan said.

Perudo is by Spirit Of Boom who stands at Eureka and the stud also has had plenty fo success in Gold Coast feature races.

The Chris Munce-trained Boomsara won the Jewel last year and took the Magic Millions Guineas this year.

Grania McAlpine, the wife of studmaster Scott McAlpine, owned the Rex Lipp-trained Tinto which won the first Jewel.
