Former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has been appointed to the Racing Queensland board, but not before some debate within state cabinet.

The board position has been vacant for several months after Mark Sowerby resigned.

Quirk stepped down as Lord Mayor in April and had been widely tipped to fill the RQ vacancy.

However, his appointment is a deviation from the normal practice in Queensland where RQ board positions are generally backed and ratified by supporters of the incumbent government.

Quirk is a stalwart of the Liberal Party and as such it is understood was not supported by some in the Labor government.

AAP understands his appointment was the subject of "some debate" in state cabinet on Monday before it was ratified on Thursday.

In a short media release Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Quirk brought a strong set of skills and capabilities to the role.

"As a thoroughbred owner and breeder, Graham Quirk lives and breathes racing," Hinchliffe said.

"He's a regular visitor to the races and is highly respected for his knowledge and understanding of the thoroughbred industry.

"Mr Quirk is a great addition to the team at RQ, who will help to deliver the stronger commercial focus needed to grow and prosper Queensland's racing industry."

Quirk will take up his appointment with Racing Queensland immediately.
