Unfinished business for Tregea in Cup

Friday 5 July 2019, 2:34pm

Toowoomba trainer Steve Tregea has some unfinished business as he tackles the $150,000 Rockhampton Cup with two runners on Saturday.

Tregea thought he could win the Rockhampton Newmarket last year with Niccanova, a short priced favourite.

But freakish rain changed conditions and led to track bias with Niccanova finishing sixth after finding a slow lane.

He had also planned to win the Cup with Bergerac but the gelding was scratched because of the wet track.

Tregea has accepted with Bergerac and Prioritise in the Cup and hopes the weather holds up this time.

Bergerac won the Listed Ipswich Cup at his last start and is top weight for the Cup.

"He doesn't handle the wet so I hope the rain stays away," Tregea said.

"But the Rocky Cup has been in mind for him for some time and he got the weight (60.5 kgs) we expected.

"Rockhampton is a nice big track and I like going there."

Prioritise was a strong sixth to Man Booker in the Eye Liner Stakes on June 15.

"He is ready to run a strong 1600m and he has won on soft tracks," Tregea said.

Meanwhile, the new Anderson Heathcote training team will have their first provincial Cup runner with Cool Chap.

Formerly trained in Victoria by the Hayes Dabernig partnership, Cool Chap won four races but has 17 minor placings.

"His form in the winter is good against some top horses and includes a second on a big track in the Tails Stakes," Anderson said.

"He likes wet tracks but should go well on any surface."
