Newitt won't ride Shamexpress in July Cup

Wednesday 26 June 2013, 1:01pm

Craig Newitt will not return to England to ride Shamexpress in the Group One July Cup.

Newitt partnered the Newmarket Handicap winner to a midfield finish in last week's Group One King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and was back in Melbourne on Wednesday, riding the first winner at Sandown.

He said he had decided to stay in Melbourne instead of heading back for Shamexpress's next start in the July Cup at Newmarket on July 13.

"I just felt I was getting some good opportunities here now and while I was away for the nine days I think I missed four winners at Flemington and a couple of midweek meetings.

"If he had finished one-two (in the King's Stand) I would have definitely went back. But I thought he was just a bit plain."

The Danny O'Brien-trained Shamexpress loomed at the 400m mark of the King's Stand but was unable to go on with it, finishing almost five lengths from the winner in ninth.
