Astro Boy Toy to miss spring despite win

Saturday 24 August 2019, 1:04pm

Promising colt Astro Boy Toy will miss the spring carnivals to concentrate on next year's big races despite his impressive win at the Gold Coast.

Astro Boy Toy ($1.40) looked under pressure on the home turn but came away to beat a Scathing ($7) by a length with 4-1/2 lengths to Epicurious ($15) in the Cyril Small Handicap (1400m).

The Toby and Trent Edmonds training partnership has a big opinion of Astro Boy Toy who is races in the colours of one of their biggest clients in the Aquis Farm syndicate.

Edmonds said a nose band had been added to Astro Boy Toy's race day gear to overcome a bad habit of the colt racing with his mouth open.

"It seems to have worked although he did give us a few anxious moments on the home turn when he appeared to be a bit flat," Toby Edmonds said.

"But that is him. He can do a few things wrong but he is pretty promising and he can go for a spell now.

"There is no need to rush him and there are plenty of carnivals for him next year."
