Nick Keal suspended for weight problems

Sunday 3 November 2019, 10:32am

Promising Queensland apprentice Nick Keal's struggles with his weight continue with the 21-year-old suspended for trying to cheat the scales at Eagle Farm.

Keal was firstly fined $500 after stewards found he had attempted to deceive the clerk of the scales by changing his boots after weighing out for a race on Sir Barnabus.

He was then suspended for two weeks when stewards were dissatisfied with his evidence at the subsequent inquiry.

The talented Toowoomba-based apprentice has fought a battle with weight since getting his metropolitan licence and rarely rides under 56kg.

In September he took two weeks off to try to get his weight under control.

Keal was stood down by the club doctor after the Sir Barnabus race and was replaced on eventual winner Snitz later in the day by Stephanie Thornton.

It was the third leg of a treble for Thornton who is now on 17 winners and second to Baylee Nothdurft (20-1/2) in the apprentices metropolitan premiership.

Nothdurft was suspended for careless riding at the meeting and will be out for 12 days after Saturday.
