Jockeys Mott and Bates on injured list

Monday 11 November 2019, 6:05pm

Popular jockey Jamie Mott has two broken legs as the result of a four-horse fall at Cranbourne.

Mott had surgery to insert a rod and screws to a fractured tibia and fibula in his left leg following the fall on Friday night.

It was later discovered he also had a fracture in his right ankle.

Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Matthew Hyland said he did not expect Mott to be sidelined for any longer than the four months originally thought.

Mott and fellow riders Jason Maskiell, John Allen and Dylan Dunn were all involved in the Cranbourne fall which resulted in the last race being abandoned.

Allen and Dunn rode at Flemington on Saturday while Maskiell rode a winner at Moe on Sunday.

Mott had been riding in good form and was sitting fourth on the Victorian Jockeys' Premiership with 33 wins before Friday night's incident.

Declan Bates is also on the injured list with a fractured knee cap after being thrown from a horse in the parade ring at Geelong on Saturday.

Earlier in the spring Bates rode his first Group One winner, guiding Begood Toya Mother home in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield.

Hyland said Bates would see Gary Zimmerman, Racing Victoria's doctor, on Tuesday to determine if he needed surgery.
