Group One stars add depth to Monash field

Tuesday 9 July 2013, 5:54pm

Group One winners Mrs Onassis and Atomic Force are booked on trucks to Melbourne to race at Caulfield after confirming their fitness in Tuesday morning gallops.

Trainer Gerald Ryan gave the green light for Mrs Onassis to return to the scene of her Oakleigh Plate win after she worked at Rosehill.

The Darren Smith-trained Atomic Force worked at Newcastle with syndicate manager Dean Watt saying the seven-year-old was scheduled to also take his place in Saturday's Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).

"We think he's going as well as he ever has in the past few years," Watt said.

"We are mindful that he is a rising eight-year-old and he has had some injuries but he is free in his action.

"The plan is the Monash, the Bletchingly and the Lawrence Stakes which is a progression from 1100 metres to 1200 to 1400.

"All the jockeys who have ridden him say they think he will get seven furlongs (1400m) so that's what we will be aiming at."

Plans for Mrs Onassis are fluid with the possibility of a stud career this spring a decision Gerry Harvey has yet to make.

Emerging sprint star Happy Galaxy is also ready to resume his career in the Monash for his new Chinese owner who hopes to be able to see him race at the International day in Hong Kong in December.

The winner of his past four starts, the latest the Group Two Expressway Stakes at Warwick Farm, Happy Galaxy is likely to have a short spring campaign which could include the Group One Manikato Stakes.

"He may have two or three runs, maybe with the Manikato - maybe - and then we might give him a break and then get him back for Christmas for the Hong Kong race," co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told Melbourne Radio RSN.

"If he's going to be winning Hong Kong races he's got to be winning on Saturday, albeit he's not wound up."
