Zamorar a benchmark runner in John Monash

Thursday 11 July 2013, 4:23pm

Since his last win at Caulfield in May 2012, Zamorar has figured in the placings six times in seven starts.

But trainer David Bourne knows the sprinter still has what it takes to make the grade, insisting the four-year-old's turn will come again.

That moment could arrive as soon as Saturday when Zamorar runs in the Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield.

"He's a good, honest consistent horse and we don't know what day he will win again, but he will get his turn," Bourne said.

Last year Zamorar was third in the Sir John Monash which was won by Platelet.

Zamorar went on to target early carnival sprint races for placings in the Bletchingly Stakes and Lawrence Stakes and a similar campaign is possible.

"But because he is only just starting to come through, what comes after that we don't know," Bourne said.

Bourne said the number 10 barrier for Zamorar on Saturday just means he will have to do a little more work at the start.

Zamorar's overall formline is impressive.

He beat Platelet at Caulfield last year with the Darren Weir-trained mare going on to win feature sprints in Adelaide.

"There are a lot of formlines around him with people looking at him for a benchmark so we are taking heart from that," Bourne said.

Jamie Mott, who guided Zamorar to second place behind Monash rival Pago Rock at Flemington on June 22, is again on board.

Zamorar will be up against Happy Galaxy who will be out to extend his winning streak to five, as well as the Gerald Ryan-trained Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis.

Happy Galaxy is likely to have a short spring campaign which could include the Group One Manikato Stakes before heading to Hong Kong.

The Hawkes Racing sprinter shares Monash favouritism with Mrs Onassis at $3.40 ahead of Darley's Skytrain at $8.

Zamorar is the only other runner under double figures at $9.50.
