Brad Stewart suspended for Mile ride

Saturday 13 July 2013, 5:49pm

Brad Stewart's tale of woe aboard Lucky Hussler in the Tattersall's Mile continued in the stewards room when he was suspended and fined.

Stewart pleaded guilty to a careless riding charge and was suspended for seven meetings for allowing Lucky Hussler to shift in on the home turn, causing Firebolt to be tightened onto the running rail, clip heels and blunder.

His suspension began after Saturday's meeting at Doomben. He will resume on July 24.

Stewards also issued Stewart with two separate fines of $200 for being 1kg overweight aboard Lucky Hussler and for overuse of the whip aboard Handsome Dane in the PPG Australia Handicap.

Stewart's tactics aboard Lucky Hussler between the 500-metre mark and home turn also came under scrutiny.

He admitted his ride aboard Lucky Hussler wasn't one of his best.

"I might've had the blinkers on too much," Stewart said.

Stewart said his tactics were to follow Listen Son.

"I thought Listen Son would take me further into the race than Solebid and was a chance of rolling out and presenting me with the run," he said.

"I should've been a bit more open minded and I didn't allow enough flexibility."

Chief steward Wade Birch accepted Stewart's explanation.

"We feel it's reasonable for you to sweat on that run considering how well you were going at the time and we can understand your thought process," Birch said.
