Bayrir to run in Rosehill barrier trial

Sunday 21 July 2013, 5:20pm

Imported French horse Bayrir headlines a contingent of Chris Waller runners at Monday's barrier trials as the premier trainer gears up for the new season.

Waller says he has been a little more relaxed since he passed the long standing Sydney training record a couple of weeks ago on his way to his third premiership.

The mark of 156 previously held by Gai Waterhouse (2002-03) and the late TJ Smith (1975-76) went by the wayside on July 6 and a treble at Rosehill on Saturday has taken Waller to 164-1/2 for the season with three meetings remaining.

"I've really enjoyed the past couple of weeks without any pressure and just going to the races relaxed," Waller said.

"But that doesn't mean we'll be taking it easy."

A Group One winner in the United States, Bayrir is one of the highest profile imports to join the Waller stable.

He ran his last race for Alain de Royer-Dupre when sixth in the Hong Kong Vase won by Red Cadeaux in December.

Raced by Graham and Linda Huddy, Bayrir was entered for Saturday's Winter Stakes but Waller opted to keep him under wraps for the time being and give him a second barrier trial.

"He will trial again. We don't have a clear cut program for him," Waller said.

"It is a matter of seeing where he fits in."

Among his other horses scheduled to trial is Champagne Cath, an impressive winner of her only start in December.

She subsequently had a minor lameness issue and Waller and her connections pulled the pin on the Magic Millions Classic to give her time to mature.

The trainer said the plan was to give her a light spring campaign with the Group Two Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 24 a target.

"She is still maturing and we won't push her too hard this campaign," Waller said.

"She is a talented filly and we want to get the best out of her and that may not be until next autumn."
