Tommy Berry has made a winning return to Australian racing with victory aboard Stylish Lad at Hawkesbury on Sunday.
The 22-year-old forfeited his chance to win the Sydney premiership when he took up a short-term contract in Hong Kong at the end of April.
During the autumn, Berry won Sydney's two biggest races - the Golden Slipper and the Doncaster - and met with immediate success in Hong Kong, riding a Group One winner for John Moore on his first day.
He finished the Hong Kong season earlier this month with an enviable 22 winners in little more than two months.
His return to racing was delayed by a careless riding suspension during which he took time out for a skiing holiday before kicking off again at Hawkesbury.
It took until the final race for Berry to get his name on the board when he guided the Clarry Conners-trained Stylish Lad to a three-quarter length win over Bless This Day.
"It's great to be back in Australia riding," Berry told Sky Racing.
"And it's good to get a win for Mr Conners. He has always been a great supporter of mine from early on."
Berry turned down the opportunity to apply for a licence in the new Hong Kong season although he would like to go back in the future.
He will return to his position with Gai Waterhouse and says he wants to experience another year of top level racing in Australia having ridden in his first Melbourne Cup last year.
He is also looking forward to being reunited with the Waterhouse-trained Slipper winner Overreach who is being prepared for a spring campaign.
