Monkstone adds to Moody 200th celebrations

Saturday 27 July 2013, 1:00pm

A colt with "a hell of a pedigree" and enough ability to overshadow his shortcomings gave Peter Moody a new spring Classic candidate at Caulfield on Saturday.

Monkstone, a $1 million Fastnet Rock yearling, made amends for his problematic debut of two weeks ago with a convincing victory in the Download Sportingbet App Handicap (1200m).

The win came only 15 minutes after Moody registered his 200th success for the season with the win of Alana's Dream at Donald, a success that meant almost as much to the trainer as that of Monkstone.

As well as being Moody's 200th winner for the year, Alana's Dream was ridden by Regan Bayliss who was having his first race ride.

But it is Monkstone that is likely to create the bigger headlines, at least for the immediate future.

As he did at his first start, Monkstone, the $1.95 favourite, missed the start and with 400m to run he appeared to be under heavy pressure.

Jockey Vlad Duric was still hard at work and two lengths behind the leaders at the 300m where Monkstone started to respond, eventually claiming the race by 2-1/2 lengths from Sportegic ($21).

Long-time leader Salute To Jude ($12) held on for third, a further three-quarters-of-a-length away.

Moody forgave Monkstone his poor start, suggesting he would iron out his barrier manners during a spell which begins on Sunday.

"He's just green ... babyish, that's all," Moody said.

"He's obviously got ability though, and a hell of a pedigree, so we'll put him away for a while and have him back for the Caulfield Guineas lead-ups.

"I think the mile's going to suit him, he hasn't travelled in either of his races yet."
