Betting has been suspended on the Sydney jockeys' premiership but Nash Rawiller isn't ready to claim victory just yet and Hugh Bowman isn't conceding defeat.
With just a seven-race meeting at Warwick Farm on Wednesday to complete the season's racing, Rawiller has a 2-1/2 win lead over Bowman.
Rawiller has ridden four winners at the past two Sydney Saturday meetings with his latest quartet taking him past his rival for the first time.
Although a European holiday and a suspension which ruled him out of a meeting last week have cost Bowman, Rawiller has had his own share of suspensions and a couple of months on the sidelines with a broken ankle during summer.
"I hope it all comes together," Rawiller said.
"My manager Brett Grant has done an amazing job and has made a difference.
"Eight weeks ago I was 15 behind Hughie. But he could come out and ride three or four on Wednesday.
"He has a stronger book of rides."
Rawiller said as a young jockey he had dreamed of winning a premiership but it wasn't until he relocated from Melbourne to Sydney as a mature rider it became possible.
"I didn't win one until I was 35," he said.
He won the 2009-10 title and followed up the following year, beating Corey Brown on both occasions, with Bowman beating Rawiller last season.
This year's battle is the closest since Blake Shinn edged Rawiller by three in 2007-08 when equine influenza shortened the Sydney season.
Both Shinn and Rawiller were retained riders for that year's premier trainer Gai Waterhouse.
The two closest tussles in recent times came in 2001-02 when Corey Brown 106 beat Darren Beadman by 1-1/2 and the 1988-89 season when Mick Dittman rode 74 winners to edge out Shane Dye by just half a win.
After his four winners on Saturday, Rawiller said it wasn't over until the fat lady sings, prompting a tweet from Bowman: "... The band is on stage. I can't see the fat lady singing though".
