Hugh Bowman is on standby to ride Hay List on Saturday but trainer John McNair says he won't make up his mind until Wednesday morning whether the horse runs in the Missile Stakes.
The triple Group One winner's regular partner Glyn Schofield is out of the Randwick meeting due to a careless riding suspension.
McNair said a workout in the morning would determine whether the injury plagued eight-year-old makes his latest comeback this week or waits for another day.
"I'll make my mind up in the morning," McNair said.
"Hugh Bowman has been booked if we decide to run.
"The track conditions come into it. Randwick doesn't seem to be drying out. But it's more important to see how he is before I make the final decision to accept with him."
McNair said Hay List was around 600kg, the weight he was when he won the 2012 Newmarket Handicap, his knee was 100 per cent and a troublesome hoof abscess was almost completely better.
"The hoof is growing back but it's a bit like watching grass grow," he said.
"But the knee looks terrific, it's 100 per cent."
After he ran fifth in a 1000m barrier trial at Randwick on Friday, McNair indicated Hay List might not be ready for the Group Three Missile (1200m) but his progress since has him warming to a start.
As popular as he will be if he starts, the race favourite will be Rain Affair, who put in a scintillating trial on Friday, beating Golden Slipper runner-up Sidestep by 9-1/4 lengths in an 800m heat.
It was just what trainer Joe Pride wanted to see.
"He's great," Pride said.
"That was what I wanted him to do."
Brisbane speedster Adebisi is likely to stay at home to race but the Chris Waller-trained Catkins was added to the entries on Tuesday.
