Atlantic Jewel ready for the spring

Tuesday 6 August 2013, 6:00pm

The unbeaten Atlantic Jewel looked as if she had never been away as she was paraded at Mark Kavanagh's stable on Tuesday ahead of her much anticipated return from a long injury break.

While the mare has been recuperating, Super Cool has kept Kavanagh's stocks high with his three-year-old autumn campaign, culminating in victory in the Australian Cup.

The stablemates have been nominated for the Cox Plate on October 26 along with another 156 horses, including 12 internationals, but their road to Moonee Valley has not yet been marked out.

Australian Derby winner It's a Dundeel, 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon and this year's Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance de Lune have also been entered for the weight-for-age championship on October 26.

Atlantic Jewel last graced the track when she won the 2012 Group One All Aged Stakes at Randwick.

Kavanagh says the Fastnet Rock mare, who has won all her seven starts, has been nursed back to fitness from a tendon injury and the stable has adopted a wait-and-see attitude.

"She's been in work since early April with a rest in between, but it's hard to assess a horse that hasn't raced for 18 months," he said.

"I don't think she has lost any of her ability."

He said he still has not made up his mind which race will be Atlantic Jewel's first for the season.

The options are the Cockram, the Memsie and Let's Elope Stakes.

"She is going to be vulnerable first-up so she she won't be running unless she is absolutely right," Kavanagh said.

Both Atlantic Jewel and Super Cool will trial at Flemington on Friday which will give Kavanagh a better indication.

Super Cool also has his name down for the Caulfield Cup on October 19 where there is a total of 173 nominations and could make his resumption at the Memsie Stakes on September 1.

Kavanagh said he would give the gelding plenty of time to prove he is back to his best before he makes any decision on which races suited best.

"He will tell us on the way where we should put him in," Kavanagh said.

"He will have as many races as he needs to get him right on the day but who is to say that the Cox Plate is his mission - we don't know yet."
