A proper spring target for Va Pensiero remains as uncertain as the identity of the jockey who will ride the underrated colt in the Run To The Rose at Rosehill.
Tim Clark's booking for the Peter Moody-trained Dissident in Saturday's Golden Rose lead-up has left trainer Jason Coyle without a rider for his San Domenico Stakes winner.
Clark rode Va Pensiero when the three-year-old resumed to beat Cluster in the San Domenico.
"I'm going to wait until after acceptances on Wednesday and figure it out then," Coyle said.
Va Pensiero's form fluctuated as a two-year-old but he showed Coyle enough to run as a late entry in the Golden Slipper where he should have finished closer than his 11th placing.
Connections will have to fork out another $50,000 if they want the colt to run in the Golden Rose.
"I know it's probably not ideal to pay the extra dollars but if they are winning on the way through it makes it a bit easier," Coyle said.
"I've always thought you either earn your way in or you choose a different path."
Irrespective of how well Va Pensiero races in the Run To The Rose, Coyle said he would still have to weigh up the merit of a Golden Rose start.
"He may miss the Golden Rose and end up running in the three-year-old race (Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes) up the straight at Flemington," Coyle said.
"A thing to consider is that he still might not be ready because he probably hasn't matured as well as a couple of the others who he raced the other day.
"To me he has still probably got autumn three-year written all over him."
