Gollan calls on McDonald for Flemington

Sunday 1 September 2013, 1:42pm

MELBOURNE Sept 1 AAP - Queensland trainer Tony Gollan has called on the jockey who helped him to a maiden Group One success to ride two of his spring hopefuls in Melbourne on Saturday.

James McDonald will reunite with last year's Galaxy winner Temple Of Boom in the Group Three Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington and the Sydney-based New Zealander will also be aboard three-year-old Whiskey Allround in the Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m).

McDonald has built up a good association with Temple Of Boom, going back to the spring of 2011 where they combined to win the Aurie's Star Handicap and Gilgai Stakes in a four-run campaign.

Gollan's first Group One came in last year's Galaxy when McDonald was again aboard, but the jockey hasn't ridden Temple Of Boom since his first-up run in the Schillaci Stakes last spring.

McDonald will also ride boom New Zealand colt Cauthen in a Listed 1400m race at Saturday's meeting.

Temple Of Boom was a close second in the Aurie's Star first-up, beaten by Broken who has since come out and won the Carlyon Stakes.

"I'm glad Broken did come out and win again," Gollan said.

"I really thought my bloke was going well into that Aurie's Star and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed when he was beaten."

Gollan was in Melbourne on Friday to watch Temple Of Boom and Whiskey Allround in jump-outs at Flemington and was delighted with both but would like to see some rain for Temple Of Boom.

"You can only hope he gets some sting out of the ground but he's in good shape," he said.

"He had a faultless preparation leading into the Aurie's Star and he's only trained on nicely since."

Whiskey Allround was scratched from a planned first-up run in the San Domenico Stakes in Sydney due to a high white cell count but the trainer said the gelding had thrived since he arrived in Melbourne.

"The query for him will be racing up the straight for the first time," Gollan said.

"It's always a question mark, but there's only one way to find out."

Temple Of Boom's younger half brother Spirit Of Boom, meanwhile, is heading for a first-up shot at The Shorts in Sydney later this month.
