David Hayes believes Jet Away can win the Caulfield Cup but his immediate focus is to have him primed for a big first-up showing in Saturday's Group One Makybe Diva Stakes.
The seven-year-old English import is joint favourite with last year's Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente in the early Caulfield Cup market and resumes in Saturday's 1600m feature at Flemington.
His opposition in the Makybe Diva will include Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune who was an impressive first-up winner of the P B Lawrence Stakes and pleased jockey Glen Boss in a jump-out at Ballarat on Saturday morning.
Jet Away has made a big impression in his only two Australian starts in March.
He scored a slashing near-last to first win in the Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo at his Australian debut and then backed that up with victory in the Group Three Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.
"He's set for first-up," Hayes said.
"We're trying to prime him for it because I just can't get Bendigo out of my head, how easily he won.
"I know it's a harder race but I'm hoping he runs well."
Hayes said Jet Away was "a lazy track worker" but races better than he works.
Jet Away, who will be ridden by Dwayne Dunn, has had a jump-out at Flemington and an exhibition gallop at Wangaratta as part of his spring build-up.
"I think he's coming along well and he'll be an exciting runner to have," Hayes said.
The entire's main spring aim is the Caulfield Cup (2400m), a race Hayes believes Jet Away is capable of winning.
"I reckon he'll stay and be strong and he'll have a real good turn of foot at that distance," he said.
While Hayes is looking forward to the return of Jet Away, he is also wary of Puissance De Lune.
"We're taking on a good one," he said.
Thousand Guineas favourite Gregers is also set to line up at Flemington, taking on the boys in the Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m).
Hayes, meanwhile, has confirmed McNeil Stakes winner Fast 'N' Rocking will head to Sydney for the Group One Golden Rose.
Fast 'N' Rocking is favourite for the $1 million feature at Rosehill on September 14 after his win at Caulfield on Saturday.
